ugghhh LightWindow Support

So apparently all of my responses in the forum have been marked as spam until today so no one thinks I am supporting this thing, greeeaaaat.   Even worse I took a look around google today and am getting some n00b bashing because they cannot seem to install it or have issues with media that is untested.  So in response I have a few words of wisdom.

  • RTFM (Read The F%$*@!*? Manual), Seriously so many questions coming in that I blatantly address in the documentation.
  • If you find there is a bug, post it.   I am working on v2 already and have had a serious amount of fuuuun with the iframes and various media.   Bottom line this is a problem in the current release for Firefox ONLY and on the PC only.
  • We are at v1.2.1, so get it, it fixes alot of bugs we saw early on.
  • Don’t ask me how to skin it, if you don’t know CSS time to learn, well until I get to v2 in which the skinning feature will be added and will be super sweet.
  • The LightWindow is a configurable system and may need to be configured on install…. so RTFM.
  • This is an Open Source Project, please keep that in mind.
  • If you have a problem and don’t give me a url, you won’t get any help.
  • Finally if you refer to it as anything but LightWindow in post (ie LightBox, GreyBox, Light….) I will not answer you.

Now I am sorry if I am coming across as a little harsh but its a two way street.   All you folks that have emailed me I will be getting back with you in a few days.   Thanks everyone that has posted and has helped out thus far, you guys are a huge help!

  1. Hey,

this is very cool. My one complaint is that the caption and params won’t validate hwen placed in a . Perhaps that content could be added into the title tag.

    Just an Idea…

    Thanks,

    -Mario

  2. YOU ROCK, spent time looking for lightbox that would open content, found moodalbox, then realised I couldn’t use both of them on the same page :( searched the net high and low and eventually found this site.

your script is freakin awesome, thanks a ton for all the hardwok, keep it up

    Shem

  3. Kevin,

First this is awesome. I’ve been playing with the javascript and CSS for a few days now and love it. However, as I began testing my mockup, I noticed that IE (6 and 7) really really don’t like me. The window seems to collapse on itself.

    Screenshot: http://iansherr.com/broken.png

In general, I had a really hard time with the original script being able to open php/html from an internal link. For some reason, the window action wouldn’t happen, and instead it would just go to the link directly. So, instead, I changed some of the js to process all internal on-site files as external pages.

Anyway, I’ve tested this with both my version and the original downloaded version and I still have trouble.

iansherr.com/untitled1.php has my version of the js running. check out the “writing’ button and click on a link to see what I’m talking about. It should be opening a window within a window, much like I have set up in the photography section. But no dice.

Just to make sure it wasn’t my fault from putzing with the script, I set it up with the originally downloaded script and still have trouble:

    iansherr.com/untitled2.php

This version has the original issue where I couldn’t open windows with internal webpages - which is why I modded the JS script to begin with. But even this version’s windows are collapsing in IE.

I know you’re releasing a new version soon, but I figured, at worst, you could see what’s going on and make sure this bug doesn’t exist in the newer version.

If you need anything more explained, please let me know. Again, excellent work, and I can’t wait to see the new code!

  4. Hi - Thanks for all your hard work. I appreciate it and am glad to have this for instances like the swf intro I just implemented using LightWindow. Makes for a very spiffy presentation.

What I wanted to report is a bug, I guess. I have the Titlebar toggled on so ‘close’ link shows. What I notice is that if you close LightWindow, then activate it again without reloading the page, the ‘close’ link in the Titlebar doesn’t show up the second time you open the LightWindow. Tried it in FireFox v1.8 and IE7 with same result. The above website link is to the test site where we are working on this project, not the permanent home of SAI Engineering so look soon if you want to try for yourself. Hope this is helpful.

Thank you, adain for your contribution to open source.

  5. Wow, this thing is great. But even after reading and using the manual, fo some reason I can’t get the inline content lightwindow to close after it is opened.

I click outside the lightwindow and the overlay background div fades away, but the inline content layer remains.

    Ideas?

  6. hi! thanks kevin for the nice piece of work. Although I still have one problem.

I can’t seem to pass variables from a FORM using GET and POST methods. I followed everything in the documentation, probably read it more than 20 times to see if i’m missing something but sadly, it still wont work.

can i request for a copy of your hello.php file in my email? thank you very much.

  7. you rock

great work. it seems to be the completest lightbox system out there right now, especially for scriptaculous usrs like me. too bad the support thing is biting you in the ass. maybe a support forum is a good idea so people can help each other out.

  9. I owe you so much beer… or booze… or both…

  13. Hey Kevin,

First of all you totally rule. I just started a new design gig and as soon as I get my first paycheck I’m donating to your macbook pro fund.

I was wondering if there was a way to get a flash music player to display in lightwindow. for example it would be cool to get the following page to display in lightwindow:

    http://delugenal.com/harris_V3/ahimsa.html

(any suggestions from anyone would totally help)

    Thanks again for everything

    hallo kevin,

thanks for this great tool. I am also going to donate, but there’s one problem I have:

I tried to use the form feature and followed exactly your form-example. the formin the lightwindw does reload, but the form data is not available in $_GET or $_POST.

this is my link for openening the lightwindow:
    ‘ params=”lightwindow_width=175,lightwindow_height=200″ class=’lightwindow page-options’>[new fleet item]

    and this is my form:

    Submit

another problem is, that the lightwindow gets about 20px wider and higher on every submit.

is there any silly mistake in my scripts? or is tehre something else to do? my prototype-version is the newset and some form-fields are arrays.

    please help me ;)

    greetings from cologne/germany

I am trying to launch the lightwindow from javascript and getting problems. I get a blank lightbox opening up: here’s my sample code:

    myLightWindow = new lightwindow();

    myLightWindow.activateWindow({
    href: ‘http://stickmanlabs.com/images/kevin_vegas.jpg’,
title: ‘Waiting for the show to start in Las Vegas’,
    author: ‘Jazzmatt’,
caption: ‘Mmmmmm Margaritas! And yes, this is me…’,
    left: 300
    });

Please help if you can. thank you

having the same problem… any reply on this?

  20. LightBox is great, but
can the modal window stay on top until users click on the close button?
Right now, if the users click on anywhere in the page, the modal window goes away.
I see the reference to “http://forum.stickmanlabs.com/viewtopic.php?id=75”
for help setting up a modal lightwindow but the link is broken
    Can someone help?

  21. My opinion complete shit. Hard coded images? Which you didn’t include.
Can’t hook events, cant get “inline content” to work at all. - I mean it’s not worth my time.

  22. This is the best lightbox but I have some issue with it that I can’t seem to be able to solve by my self. if you’ll take a look at the website you’ll see that after I open the lightwindow the site jump click again and it’d goes back to it’s place if any one can check it out cuse I really need the swf ability
    Thanks
    Ran

  23. This is awesome. I love it. I wish there was a way for me to automatically close the window after doing whatever I need to do. I’m looking through the source, but I don’t know how to activate the window I’m currently using. Any help will be much appreciated.

  24. Nevermind, figured it out: parent.myLightWindow.deactivate();

Thank you for this awesome software.

  27. Hi,

Has anyone had the problem of quicktime not showing a picture but having audio come through in Firefox 3 on pc? I can get quicktime to work in a couple other lightbox mods but for some reason it won’t work right for me in ff3. Even on the demo links provided here on the site I get no picture. I checked on a couple other pc’s as well and same thing. Any fix?

    Hello!

Thank you very much for this great stuff!

Currently I’m using symfony 1.1.2. which comes with prototype 1.6.0.2.

LightWindow doesn’t work properly with this version. If I open a LightWindow with a size of 800 x 600 pixels, the window appears in die correct dimensions, but a few milliseconds later (when content is loaded), the window gets blown up to screensize.

I can’t downgrade to the older version of prototype.

Any hints to get it work?

  29. First off, thank you for creating lightwindow, it works great!

I have however ran into a bug. This bug is easily recreated on the lightwindow demo page by defining a url variable (i.e. http://www.stickmanlabs.com/lightwindow/?test=1), refreshing the page, and then clicking on the “inline content” demo link. It appears lightwindows inline content refuses to work when url variables are defined.

Is there a way to fix this?

I’d love to get it working as soon as possible.

  30. thanks..

  31. It seems there’s a bug when you open a lightwindow to an image that has a high dpi value - as per usual this bug is only evident in IE6 and 7. Basically the image opens up tiny the first time you open it (and I mean tiny - smaller than a stamp) but thereafter it opens ok. If anyone’s seen this and has come up with a solution, I’d love to hear from you.

BTW, I’m not expecting any help from stickman himself on this - it seems that since he got enough cash to buy his macbook he closed the forum and isn’t giving any support even to those of us who donated not insignificant sums of money towards his cause.
