LightWindow v1.2 Released

I know I haven’t been around for awhile but I have been pretty busy with work and on some new libraries coming this week to a blog near you.   I had time to get to some major bugs and put up a forum, use it, I will only help people who post there and give me a URL.

Major Fixes

  • Firefox Bugs.
  • Flash and all media will show up on first load in Firefox Win.
  • The titles no longer jump around and stay visible when they shouldn’t.
  • The CSS has been updated/fixed so as not to be obtrusive with any of your CSS.
  • mimeTypes have been added for media and image types.
  • .. and a bunch of other little things here and there.

I am now planning on v2 and want some feedback on some features, please post in the forum.   The one at the top of my head is allowing someone to actually make a flash gallery as well as a photo gallery.   Also my feedburner will be up tonight, so please subscribe to keep up with new libraries and updates as the forum will run the support and my blog will keep you apprised aside from the Project Page.

  1. Any plan to make this a Rails plugin?

Make a helper to include the lightwindow JS, something like

Also writing some code in application.js and using proxies to call it form RJS would be really slick.

    For example:
    page.show_window :width => 500, :height => 350, :url => ‘/controller/my_action’

I’d be willing to help you if you decided to go ahead :-)

  2. Hi,
I am very interested in using the LightWindow-Version for playing my QuickTime-Movies in an opening LightWindow. But it seems, that my knowledge about integrating this script is too bad. The following code is located in the website:

Quicktime Movie Example - Watch a movie!

The quicktime-movie is loaded; but the LightWindow isn’t there.
    Any help or hints?

    Kind Regards
    Holger

Post in the forum and post a url, pasting my demo code tells me absolutely nothing. Thanks.

I hadn’t planned on it but I would love to help you out. Lets put our heads together and I’ll post it up on my site with svn and throw credit your way and put you in my links sidebar. My email is stickmanlabs@gmail.com

  4. Kevin, any chance to add an option to toggle the visibility (display them without a mouseover) of the previous and next links on the image gallery? One of the things I’ve noticed with people who aren’t familiar with these types of galleries is that they have more options they think. Less experienced users tend to stare at the gallery looking for a link instead of moving the mouse around. Great work, its exciting to see some cool stuff developed in house.

    Kevin,

I have the same problem as Holger Hedrich. When viewing your lightwindow samples, I am not seeing anything that suggests you are doing anything but pointing to a different URL. No overlays of fancy Javatricks seem to be happening. I am probably missing the point of your work. I came to your site after Googling “Lightbox Modifications” and then surfing around. I am using Safari 2.0

Could your demo libraries possibly be broken?

  8. Kevin,

Great little app you’ve made here.

I was wondering if there is currently a way to make a light window popup from a javascript call that’s within flash.

I was thinking of creating a set of links that are hidden in the html page so that each link would be initialized via the lightwindow initialization and then just do the corresponding javascript call from a button inside flash.

Does this sound like it’d work? If so what function should I call in the flash to make the lightwindow popup. If not then what would you suggest to get this idea to work.

    Thanks

  11. You have done a great job. I got this link through www.smashingmagazine.com. Both of you have done a great job. By using your script, my site www.talentshakes.com is going to be great too..

    Thanks a Million.

  12. Hi,
Came here after I checked out your posts on Lightbox Gone Wild by Crhis Campbell

Oh! how comes lightwindow doesn’t print the whole external site in Konqueror (v3.5.6; only header shows up) !??

C’mon  Was joking Kevin ;) After testing lightwindow on Firefox, Opera & Konqueror (Linux) as well as IE6 (Windows sp2), IMHO you’ve done a very usefull tool, which is incredibly cross-browser & platform already :D
I’ll check out next innovations if any

    Bravo !

  13. Was somehow a little bit skeptical about your claims what your scripts can do.
But have to confirm it’s a great piece of work. Like it very much and is easy to use too. Can’t wait for your next version.

  14. I love the ease of use and functionality of lightwindow. One thing that bugged me was that the js didn’t come with a compressed file too (and gzipped, you doing it once is easier than countless people doing the same thing over and over). I don’t get why people who put out packages don’t do this simple process and include it in the download (it’s not like the same data is going to be much bigger).

Overall I appreciate your efforts - just ranting a tiny bit on how you suggest using “grown up methods” (I use compression and gzip for non-IE/Netscape 4 browsers) and don’t support the ideology.

  15. let us allow visitors to save images ..

  16. Any news on when the new release will be out? Needing support for video files. Thanks for the hard work

  18. Hei,

I’m using lightwindow, but everytime I load a ajax content on the page, and use the “LightWindowInit” to reinitialize the LightWindow script for the images loaded with the ajax content, it seems not woeking well.. the image doesnt load…

    Hi there,

I noticed when the window is maximized the script has an option to maximize to browser window size , but if I resize the browser, the lightwindow still says the same size? Any chance that can be fixed?

  20. Interesting…

Just wondering. Is it possible to configure lightwindow in a way that would disable the close function when a visitor clicked outside of the window area? i.e. i want to use it to build forms, however i am nervous as one accidental mouse click could mean the close of the window, and the loss of all data being entered…

    thanks.

  24. Hi there!

First of all, you deserve a *huge* thanksgiving: you did the most complete job in this field: congratz!

Secondly, I noticed that –even with the fix you are suggesting above in a comment– LW is having troubles on IE6. Here are the tests I performed (only with single image and image gallery):

    IE6:
    - my site: not working, the miniwindow is placed in a negative X,Y position and cannot be seen
    - your demo: partially working, the miniwindow is correctly positioned but it is too narrow

    IE7: both are working

In the close future, more tests are planned with Konqueror, Safari, Opera/Win, Opera/Mac, Opera/Linux and I do not exclude I’d find time for fixing the CSS to take into account IE6’s peculiarities.

However, if you know a quick and dirty fix, it’d be appreciated for the moment. Thanks!

    Cheers,

    Federico

  25. Hi! I am using the light window which btw is great, but i’v got to a problem which is that i cant figure out how to use a custom button instead of the normal button used in the example if there is any kind of exemple how to change to a normal image file as button instead using the code.

  26. Cool…

  27. Alright. So I tried posting a question in the forums, and was promptly autobanned by the akismet bot, even though it can’t seem to catch the ACTUAL spam, it felt my post was garbage. So I can’t even view the forums ANONYMOUSLY anymore.

Then I donated towards your MacBookPro and sent you an email with my question and requesting that you unban me at the forum (using the email that the forum spits out when it banned me).

    No response.

Then I emailed you two more times.

    Still nothing.

    WTF?!

  28. Your blog is getting better and better! Previous posts were good, but this one is just FABULOUS.

  29. are there any plans on releasing a Wordpress plugin for lightwindow?

this would solve all of my problems. I have downloaded so many other plugins (lightbox, slimbox, multibox, etc.), but this one seems to do the trick for EVERYTHING.

It would be great if a Wordpress Plugin was developed for LightWindow.
